Who is at fault?
Engineered stone has been used as a cheap alternative to marble and granite in kitchens across the country. One of its main distributors is currently under investigation.
The composition of engineered stone consists mainly of crushed quartz that is bound together using polymer resin and pigments. The ‘killer ingredient’ that has been putting Aussie Tradesmen in the hospital is the Silica that becomes airborne once aggravated.
The question of ‘bad practice or bad product’ comes into effect when it has been known as safe workplace practice to cut these stones while wet and in full-protective gear. So is it the manufacturers fault for distributing a harmful product or is it the fault of negligence in the workplace? Either way, Safe Work Australia is seeing to ban this harmful material being installed in any future Australian homes. The investigation took place after news outlets accused the manufacturer of not emphasising the dangers of working with the material.
